Portugal will face England in the last eight of the World Cup after a dramatic 1-0 win over Holland.
The game saw an astonishing four red cards and a record-equalling 16 bookings, but when the dust settled it was Phil Scolari's Portugal who were left standing.
Holland started the brighter of the two teams, with Mark van Bommel drilling an effort just wide and then Arjen Robben blazing over from distance.
However, it was Portugal who broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute when Pauleta teed up Maniche who sidestepped Andre Ooijer before lashing his effort past Edwin Van der Sar from 14 yards.
Arsenal's Robin van Persie came close to grabbing an equaliser for Maco van Basten's men but his superb jinking run ended with a swerving shot across goal, while at the other end Van der Sar saved brilliantly with his feet to deny Pauleta's clever turn and strike.
Portugal, however, were reduced to ten men a minute before the half-time break when Costinha inexplicably handled and was shown a second yellow card by the Russain referee Valentin Ivanov.
The Dutch were unlucky not to draw level just after the break when Philip Cocu's volley from eight yards crashed back off the crossbar, while at the other end Miguel's effort was pushed away by Van der Sar.
Van Bommel went close again moments later but his long range drive was pushed just wide of the post by a sprawling Ricardo, who was forced into action again moments later to deny Wesley Sneijder's rasping shot.
Luis Figo was fortunate not to see red for a headbutt on van Bommel as tempers began to flare - but there was a second red card in the 62nd minute when Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz was shown a second yellow for flinging an arm in the face of Figo.
A third dismissal soon followed as Ivanov completely lost the plot - Deco booked for time wasting before walking.
Kuyt was denied by Ricardo late on as Holland piled forward, before Giovanni van Bronckhorst became the fourth player to see red late on - with the 16 yellows and four red cards setting a new World Cup record.
So it will be a repeat of the Euro 2004 quarter-final as England get ready to face Portugal in Gelsenkirchen next Saturday.
