Angola missed out on the last 16 after a late Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh goal gained Iran a 1-1 draw in Group D.

Angola knew they would be in with a chance of progressing before the game providing they could pick up the three points, and they looked to be on their way after Amado Flavio's goal on the hour.

However, Bakhtiarizadeh's strike with fifteen minutes to go ensured it is Mexico who join Portugal in the last 16.

Joao Ricardo was the busier of the two goalkeepers and he did well to deny the Iranians in the 14th minute when Vahid Hashemian's through-ball on the turn put Ferydoon Zandi in on goal.

Both sides were forced into early subsitutions, which appeared to affect the flow of the game.

Iranian defender Mohammad Nosrati was replaced by Masoud Shojaei after what appeared to be a hamstring strain inside the first 10 minutes while Angolan forward Love came on in place of Mateus after he fell awkwardly in a challenge with Hossain Kaebi midway through the half.

Ali Daei came close with a 25-yard free-kick before missing the best chance of the half in the 23rd minute.

Mehdi Mahdavikia found the Bayern Munich frontman in plenty of space, but Daei could only head high and wide when it appeared easier to score.

Angolan midfielder Antonio Mendonca was perfectly placed on the post to clear Ferydoon Zandi's powerful header in the 27th minute and, with five minutes left in the half, Andranik Teymourian's low shot was collected at the second attempt by Joao Ricardo as Iran contined to have the better of the play.

Iran keeper Ebrahim Mirzapour finally had to make a save of significance in first half injury time when he pushed Love's shot from inside the penalty area around the post for a corner.

Angola showed signs of improvement in the second half with Antonio Mendonca going close a couple of times and they did take the lead on the hour mark with Flavio's 14th international goal.

Iran lost possession and allowed Jose Ze Kalanga to pick up the ball down the right. He then sent over a pinpoint cross which Flavio met with a thumping header which left Ebrahim Mirzapour with no chance.

Angola looked as though they may hold on for the win but Bakhtiarizadeh broke their hearts with fifteen minutes remaining, rising highest to head home a right-wing corner.
