Argentina and Brazil may have fallen short, but Sunday's final between Italy and France will still provide some of the most glamorous names in the game with Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Francesco Totti and Fabio Cannavaro all on show.
Here, Phil Barnett looks at the players with the pedigree but not the profile who could play decisive roles in Berlin on Sunday.
FRANCE
FRANCK RIBERY
One of the sensations of the tournament, Ribery has gone from petulant young underachiever to world beater in a matter of weeks. Skilful, inventive and intelligent, the Marseille midfielder has justified Raymond Domenech's decision to omit Ludovic Giuly.
FLORENT MALOUDA
Almost as impressive as Ribery on the opposite flank, Malouda has been installed as first choice on the left and has repaid Domenech's faith in him with sprightly, clever performances bursting from midfield.
SIDNEY GOVOU
Only selected due to Djibril Cisse's injury before the finals, Govou has played a bit-part role but with Louis Saha injured, could feature late on in the final. Similar in many ways to Malouda but with more goalscoring prowess.
DAVID TREZEGUET
The prolific Juventus striker does not have the reputation to match his goalscoring record and Domenech remains to be convinced, choosing instead to deploy Thierry Henry alone up front. But the proven Trezeguet could get his chance when it matters most on Sunday.
ITALY
GIANLUCA ZAMBROTTA
One of the most underrated players in the competition, Zambrotta has the talent to play in any outfield position. Excellent on either wing, he has pace, skill, an eye for goal and solid defensive qualities.
MAURO CAMORANESI
The Argentina-born dribbler has made little impact so far but Marcello Lippi has kept faith in the mercurial Juve man, who could burst into life against France.
ANDREA PIRLO
One of the players of the tournament alongside team-mate Cannavaro, Pirlo - the thinking man's playmaker - has been inspirational, making up for Totti's shortcomings with his insightful, accurate passing and composed co-ordination of matches.
VINCENZO IAQUINTA
First-choice striker Luca Toni has done just enough to justify his place in the Azzurri side while Alberto Gilardino has not really impressed and Udinese striker Iaquinta is chomping at the bit to figure. He came off the bench to score against Ghana and is ahead of Filippo Inzaghi in the pecking order.
