GERMANY

JENS LEHMANN: Largely in control of the danger area. Superbly denied Luca Toni and Fabio Grossi on one-on-ones. Chanceless against the two late strikes. 7.

ARNE FRIEDRICH: Constant liability as right-back. Embarrassed by Grosso on three occasions. Picked up speed midway through the second half. 5.

PER MERTESACKER: Strong in the air, good in the tackle. Rock solid. 7.

CHRISTOPH METZELDER: Denied Luca Toni from close range in the 31st minute. Never a cause for concern. 7.

PHILIPP LAHM: Rediscovered his attacking touch after looking vulnerable defensively early on. Failed to get in deadly crosses, however. 6.

SEBASTIAN KEHL: Great replacement for suspended Torsten Frings despite having seen only 25 minutes of playing time in the tournament. Strong on transition from attack to defence. 7.

TIM BOROWSKI (Schweinsteiger, 73 mins): Not as efficient as in previous matches. Not as aggressive as the suspended Torsten Frings. 6.

BERND SCHNEIDER (Odonkor, 83 mins): Squandered Germany's biggest chance of the opening period when firing over from a right angle. Reliable, yet unspectacular on right wing. 6.

MICHAEL BALLACK: Ineffective in the first half. Tried to seize control midway through the second period. Never got close to scoring. 6.

MIROSLAV KLOSE (Oliver Neuville, 111 mins): Worked hard early on but apparently grew tired as game progressed. Never much of a threat in front of the goal. 6.

LUKAS PODOLSKI: Started out strongly. Missed Germany's two biggest scoring opportunities in extra-time. 7.

SUBSTITUTES

BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER: Lacked accuracy with his set-pieces but refuelled Germany4s attacking department after his late substitution. 6.

DAVID ODONKOR: Another spirited displayed by the late substitute, who created several dangerous openings. 7.

OLIVER NEUVILLE: The man who would have been Germany's first penalty taker could not make much of an impact. 6.

ITALY

GIANLUIGI BUFFON: Barely tested in the first half, denied Klose in normal time and Podolski after 115 minutes to keep his side in the match. 8.

GIANLUCA ZAMBROTTA: Reliable as always. Hit woodwork twice in extra time. 7.

FABIO CANNAVARO: Living up to his billing as one of the best centre-backs in the game. Strong in the air, always ahead of play. 7.

MARCO MATERAZZI: Integral part of Italy's strong back-line. 7.

FABIO GROSSO: No mistakes defensively, several strong runs down the length of the field. Had a good chance after the break and was rewarded with a superb late strike. 8.

MAURO CAMORANESI (Vincenzo Iaquinta, 91 minutes): Very active in first half, disappeared in second period. 7.

GENNARO GATTUSO: Did his usual damage in defensive midfield. 7.

ANDREA PIRLO: Sent in a couple of dangerous set-pieces. Always a threat, either by passing or shooting himself. Set up winner and was voted man of the match. 8.

SIMONE PERROTTA (Del Piero, 104 mins): Barely involved. His departure coincided with Italy's improvement. 6.

FRANCESCO TOTTI: Paved the way for Italy's biggest chance of the opening period when setting up Luca Toni. Pulling the strings in midfield. Always dangerous. 7.

LUCA TONI (Gilardino, 74 mins): Worked hard up front but failed to get the ball past Lehmann in an early one-on-one meeting. 6.

SUBSTITUTES

ALBERTO GILARDINO: Provided an offensive spark. Unfortunate to see his close-range shot bouncing off the near post after taking Metzelder and Ballack to school. Hit woodwork in extra time. 7.

VINCENZO IAQUINTA: Provided a spark for Italy's attacking department. 7.

ALESSANDRO DEL PIERO: Put the game away with his late counter-attack goal. 7.
