Argentina have yet to accept Jose Pekerman's resignation as coach of the national side.

Pekerman quit immediately after the penalty shoot-out defeat to Germany which ended the South American side's run in the World Cup at the quarter-final stage, but Argentinian Football Federation president Julio Grondona said: "No team played better than Argentina in the World Cup.

"Sometimes, we pressed Germany back. The team showed a good level of football. We just lacked luck and ability in the final metres."

Grondona, who before the defeat had insisted he wanted Pekerman to remain in charge of the side after the tournament, also revealed he was surprised by the coach's decision.

"I did not hope for it," he said.

"It is not the moment to talk about it. Nothing is finalised. I am going to think about that in Buenos Aires, when it is quieter."

Argentina goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri, who was replaced midway through the second half by Leo Franco after a collision with Germany striker Miroslav Klose, added: "Jose taught me a lot and I told him that. I received a lot from his person."
