Maxi Rodriguez claimed that luck was on his side after a wonder goal propelled Argentina into the World Cup quarter-finals.
The Atletico Madrid midfielder scored the decisive goal eight minutes into extra-time to break Mexico's hearts.
He smashed home an unstoppable volley into the top corner following a long cross-field ball from Juan Sorin.
Rodriguez said: "I just took the ball on my chest and decided to take a chance.
"To be honest, it could have gone into the stand but luckily it went into the net.
"I think that goal helped ease the pressure on us a little bit.
"It was a difficult game and we just couldn't find a way through."
Mexico opened the scoring after six minutes through skipper Rafael Marquez, who got ahead of Gabriel Heinze at the back post.
However, Argentina equalised four minutes later, with Hernan Crespo being credited with finding the target even though it appeared to be an own goal from Jared Borgetti.
Jose Pekerman, coach of the two-time champions, knew they had been in a game but is optimistic about the future and their chances against Germany.
He said: "We have really good players who want to be champions. We are fulfilling our mission by moving forward in the tournament.
"We will get stronger and then improve, I am sure of that.
"We know the World Cup is not a bed of roses and Mexico always has been a difficult rival.
"At times we let ourselves down and we looked a little bit tired but the main thing is we are through to the next round."
Mexico coach Ricardo La Volpe would like to remain in charge even though his contract has now expired.
But first of all he has to meet the Mexican football association's president to discuss the campaign.
La Volpe said: "I would like to continue because people know that we can play good football.
"But whether I can stay on is impossible to say.
"My contract has finished now and the president will decide.
"You need a little bit of luck in this game, that is very important and we didn't have it tonight."
