Mexico reached the last 16 despite Nuno Maniche and a Simao Sabrosa penalty helping Group D winners Portugal to a 2-1 victory in Gelsenkirchen.

Omar Bravo missed a penalty for Mexico but it didn't matter as Angola's draw with Iran meant they went through to the knockout stages anyway.

Mexico were first out of the blocks with Jose Fonseca forcing Ricardo into a good save after he beat two men inside the Portugal box.

But it was Portugal who took the lead after six minutes with a move of real quality, started and finished by former Chelsea loanee Maniche.

He fed Simao on the left and continued his run into the box, firing home the return pass from 15 yards.

Simao himself them made it 2-0, confidently scoring from the penalty spot after skipper Rafael Marquez had needlessly handled from a corner after 24 minutes.

Portugal were threatening to run riot with Heldar Postiga and Luis Figo coming close but Ricardo had to be alert to keep out Bravo's close-range strike before Fonseca headed Mexico a lifeline in the 29th minute.

Mexico should have grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half-time but Ricardo somehow managed to palm the ball away from danger in a crowded box, with Fonseca and Pavel Pardo lurking.

Mexico went searching for an equaliser at the start of the second half and they were awarded a penalty after 58 minutes when Luis Miguel was harshly penalised for handball.

However, Bravo fired the resulting penalty well high and wide of the goal and two minutes later things got worse when Luis Perez was sent off for a second bookable offence.

At first it looked as though Mexico had been awarded another penalty but Perez was instead booked for diving.

The Mexicans did go in search of an equaliser but it was Portugal who went closest to extending their lead when Nuno Gomes nearly got on to the end of a Simao cross on 83.

It turned out the defeat didn't matter as Angola drew 1-1 with Iran in the other Group D game.
