Henrik Larsson's late goal earned Sweden a 2-2 draw with England, who have won Group B and face a second-round meeting with Ecuador on Sunday.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's troops only needed a point to top the group but after Marcus Allback's header had cancelled out Joe Cole's stunning 30-yard opener, sub Steven Gerrard appeared to have secured victory with a powerful header on 85 minutes.

But a long throw-in caused chaos in the England box on 90 minutes and Larsson poked a close-range shot into the back of the net to ensure England's 38-year wait for a win over the Swedes goes on.

England's night started badly with Michael Owen suffering a twisted right knee in the first minute - and he will have a scan on Wednesday which will decide his World Cup fate.

Peter Crouch replaced him as Wayne Rooney's partner but it was Frank Lampard who posed the early threat with two left-footed drives.

Lampard then headed a Rooney cross wide and Joe Cole flashed a 20-yard strike just over the bar, while Kim Kallstrom headed wide for the Swedes and Teddy Lucic's close-range volley slammed into Lampard.

England enjoyed a spell of possession from 25 minutes on and after Rooney was blocked by some resilient defending, the deadlock was broken on 34 minutes in stunning style.

A headed clearance fell to Joe Cole 30 yards out and he chest-controlled the ball before thumping a dipping volley into the net.

Lampard wasted another two chances before the break, driving a shot over the bar and chipping straight at Andreas Isaksson, but England went into the interval with a deserved lead.

It only lasted six minutes, though, as Tobias Linderoth's corner was glanced into the net by former Aston Villa striker Allback for the 2,000th World Cup goal.

The equaliser rocked England and stirred the Swedes, who nearly scored again minutes later when Larsson's goalbound header from a corner hit Jamie Carragher's arm and was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Paul Robinson.

Olof Mellberg then hooked a shot onto the bar before Gerrard and Sol Campbell came on for Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

Gerrard's first real action was to hook a Kallstrom shot off the line on 71 minutes as England were pushed deeper and deeper into their own half.

But the Liverpool skipper made an impact at the other end on 85 minutes, heading home a fine cross from Joe Cole.

England's defending had been shoddy for most of the night and it proved costly late on as no-one dealt with a long throw-in and Larsson pounced.
