Sweden coach Lars Lagerback insisted his team would not settle for the draw they need against England to progress to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

A win will see Sweden head Group B and would mean an extra day of rest before having to face either Germany or Ecuador.

Lagerback said: "It is most important that we go out there and do our own job. If we can win the game it gives us an extra day of rest. We need at least to get a draw but we always try to win."

Lagerback's side are looking to extend an 11-game unbeaten sequence against England which spans 38 years.

They are also hoping to make it four games without a victory for England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson against his home nation.

Lagerback and Eriksson did meet at a talent academy for young footballers in the late 1970s but they rarely see each other and their careers have followed different paths.

The level of Swedish support, whose flags were in evidence in this vibrant city, has been striking and something of a boost for a Swedish squad which has had its problems with player in-fighting and squabbles with the media.

Lagerback added: "I am a little surprised there are so many Sweden supporters. I knew there was a huge interest in Sweden, but it's always positive to have a lot of support in the stands."

Lagerback was remaining guarded over whether Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been struggling to recover from a groin injury, would take any part in the match.

He was generous, however, in his praise of Wayne Rooney, who was due to start for the first time since recovering from his metatarsal injury.

Lagerback said: "A fit Rooney is a world-class player. Any team would like to have a player like that. But England have good players all over the pitch. We must not give them much time.

"There is a lot of character in my players. We've always had good matches against top sides. I'm positive about the match."
