Mexico defender Mario Mendez has warned his team-mates not to be complacent about their final Group D match against a Portugal team that will be without five key players.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari admits that his side, who have already qualified for the last 16, can afford to lose the game at the Veltins Arena and has rested the his players on yellow cards.

But Mendez does not believe that a weakened Portugal side will easily surrender the point Mexico need to be sure of a place in the knockout rounds.

Mendez said: "I don't think that what Portugal are doing will affect the game.

"In fact it could have the opposite effect because the players will come off the bench and they will be very motivated to do well.

"It will be doubly important for us to concentrate because they will be eager to make a good impression and there is no pressure on them."

Mendez insisted the mood in the Mexican camp was a good one ahead of the game.

"We are calm," he said. "There is no anxiety - we will be confident for tomorrow's match which we will try and win."

Mexico got off to a winning start in Group D with a 3-1 win over Iran secured by two goals from Omar Bravo and one from Brazilian-born Zinha.

However, a 0-0 draw with Angola has left Mexico with work still to do although the odds are still heavily stacked in their favour.

A point against Portugal will suffice while even if they lose and Angola win against Iran, the Africans also start with a goal difference that is three inferior to the Latin Americans.

Mendez also claimed the team would not be trying to keep informed about how the Angola v Iran game was progressing.

"We must make sure we are happy with our own performance," said 27-year-old Mendez.

"All we are concentrating on is our own match and we hope we will not need to ask what Angola are doing."

There was good news for Mexico with the decision by the medical staff to make Jared Borgetti available to play.

The striker injured a hamstring in the 3-1 win over Iran and missed the goalless draw with Angola.

His presence is important to the Mexicans as he scored 14 goals in the qualifying campaign for the World Cup - more than any player for any of the 206 teams that took part.

However, team doctor Jose Luis Serrano, while saying medically there was no risk in playing Borgetti, admitted that in terms of match fitness Borgetti was only at 80% of his capacity so coach Ricardo Lavolpe must decide whether or not to risk the Bolton man.

Lavolpe may be tempted to pep up his midfield with Gerardo Torrado having a disappointing tournament while Zinha, who scored as a substitute against Iran, disappointed as a starter against Angola.
