Jared Borgetti will watch from the sidelines and keep his fingers crossed that Mexico progress to the last 16 when they face Portugal.

For it means the Bolton striker will have a chance of playing in the next phase after he suffered a thigh injury.

That has ruled him out the match on Wednesday but trainer Milton Graniolatti said: "There's hope he will play in the next game."

Borgetti underwent a second MRI scan yesterday and was able to do some jogging.

He was injured chasing a loose ball during Mexico's 3-1 win against Iran.

Mexico could only achieve a draw against Angola but are quietly confident going into the match with Portugal, who have already qualified.

Midfielder Pavel Pardo said: "We are ready and capable of winning the game.

"Football is like life, you have good days and bad days, and it did not go well for us against Angola."

Portugal need a point to top the group after disposing of Iran.

However, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari may decide to rest Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco and Pauleta.

The trio are all on one booking and another yellow card would rule them out of the next phase - a tough game against either Argentina or Holland.

Inter Milan winger Luis Figo said: "Mexico represent a very hard challenge.

"But I am generally delighted with the way things have gone, although we need to keep our feet on the ground."

Defender Fernando Meira added: "I believe in this team's ability and we're all looking forward to taking on Mexico."
