Costa Rica defender Gabriel Badilla believes a win is vital in their final World Cup Group A game against Poland on Tuesday if only to silence their critics.
Badilla, 21, has been angered by the backlash following successive defeats against Germany and Ecuador.
He said: "We will try to win our last game so that we can clean up our image.
"Critics will never be absent. These people sit on a chair and give an opinion without knowing the full story.
"They don't take into account that our experienced players have done good things for this team.
"These players have taken us to two World Cups and taught a lot of things.
"Experiences like this make you be stronger as person and a player."
Badilla thanked Paulo Wanchope for helping him.
Wanchope is looking to play in Europe again after wearing the colours of Derby, West Ham and Manchester City among others.
Badilla said: "I have learned a lot from Paulo.
"You always have to take positives from playing in the World Cup. There is great professionalism in the squad, no matter what some people are saying."
