Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc has blamed over-confidence for the disastrous World Cup defeat by Ecuador.

The Poles were left stunned as the South Americans claimed a 2-0 triumph in Gelsenkirchen in their Group A opener.

But the Celtic number one believes his team were the architects of their own downfall.

Boruc said: "It is hard to know where to start working out where the problems are, but there is little doubt we were too confident before the kick-off.

"We thought it would be easy, but the result proved us wrong. We just went to pieces and it is embarrassing.

"I do not want to start naming people, I don't want to get into that. But it wasn't good enough.

"On the one hand, we kept the ball for long spells and had four men trying to support Maciej Zurawski up front.

"But, on the other, we gave away stupid goals. It was baffling.

"The worst thing for me was that I had no chance of saving either goal - that really annoys me."

But Boruc is convinced complacency will not feature in the Poles' thinking on Wednesday when they face the host nation in Dortmund.

He added: "Maybe one good thing will be that, against Germany, we will not be favourites and will not make the mistake of being too confident again."
