Two-goal hero Paulo Wanchope insists Costa Rica's performance in their 4-2 opening World Cup defeat to Germany proved they "are ready to compete".

The former Manchester City striker stunned the host nation in the 12th and 73rd minutes with clinical finishes on deadly through-balls which badly exposed the German defence.

Two goals by Miroslav Klose as well as sensational strikes from Philipp Lahm and Torsten Frings handed Germany victory, yet Wanchope still fancies his country's chances to reach the knockout stages.

"We have a good chance to qualify because we played well," Wanchope said after Friday's match. "We need to concentrate a little bit more and keep it going."

Wanchope felt the underdogs did well in front of the 66,000 fans in attendance and an estimated 1.5 billion global television audience.

"It was a good performance from Costa Rica," he said. "Their (Germany's) first and their last goals were incredible and there was not much we could do about that.

"In general terms, we are ready to compete and we will try to reach the next round."

"We have a very good side and we are sticking together very well."

Meanwhile, strike partner Ronald Gomez has joined those who claim Germany's once-mighty back-line is in danger of costing the host nation their World Cup dream.

"Their defence is terrible," he said. "I'm confident they won't reach the final."
