Costa Rica defender Gilberto Martinez's World Cup is over due to a leg injury.

Martinez damaged a tendon in his left leg during the tournament's opening match against Germany, which his team lost 4-2, and will be out of action for the remainder of the competition.

The defender, who underwent a scan this on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury, is now set to return to Italy where he will begin his rehabilitation with his club Brescia.
