Called into the US squad for the last World Cup despite having played no part in qualifying, Pablo Mastroeni will arrive in Germany this time around as an integral part of Bruce Arena's travelling party.
Argentinian-born, Mastroeni moved to America at the age of four and was granted citizenship in 2001, making his international debut in a 0-0 draw against Ecuador.
At that stage he was playing his MLS football for Miami Fusion but a move to Colorado Rapids followed in 2002 and he has gone on to establish himself as one of the foremost practitioners of the defensive-midfield role in the American league.
Not shy of a tackle and a terrier around the field, the 29-year-old started three games at the last World Cup and will hope to better that tally in Germany this summer, particularly having played a key role in the qualification campaign this time around.
