Position: Defender
Born: 20.12.80
Club: Arsenal

Before Euro 2004, Ashley Cole was perceived by many England observers as something of a liability. The Arsenal left-back was struggling to strike the correct balance between attack and defence, often leaving open space for opposition wingers to exploit.

At one stage, Sven-Goran Eriksson appeared to be leaning towards Wayne Bridge as his first choice for the position but Cole seized his chance in Portugal and, somewhat surprisingly, enjoyed an outstanding tournament.

Yet few at Highbury would have been shocked by Cole's elevation to world-class status (he was selected in UEFA's Euro 2004 All Star squad). As one of the Gunners' 'Untouchables' in the preceding Premiership campaign, he had been part of a defence that conceded just 26 goals in 38 games - proof he could be relied upon as part of a solid backline.

Energy and enthusiasm have been hallmarks of Cole's game ever since he burst onto the scene at the end of the 1999/2000 season. Now through experience, the 26-year-old has developed the know-how to curb his attacking instincts when required.

A broken foot kept Cole on the sidelines towards the end of 2005 and he was not involved when England beat Argentina 3-2 in November.

However, neither Bridge nor Paul Konchesky covered themselves in glory in that thrilling match, so expect Cole to be ever-present for England for the third tournament running.
