Although primarily right-footed, Gilberto Martinez operates on the left side of Costa Rica's defence, a position he has held down since making his name at the last World Cup.

A powerful, no-nonsense defender and very good in the air, he is one of the first names on the teamsheet and played a major role in Costa Rica's qualification, starting eight out of the 10 games.

Martinez played in all three games for Costa Rica at the last World Cup, which ultimately ended in a disappointment with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of eventual winners Brazil.

But Martinez is a far more experienced campaigner now, and will be determined to help Costa Rica at least progress beyond the group stage this time around.
