Edwin Villafuerte became the first choice keeper for Ecuador shortly after Copa America 2004, following a serious injury to Jose Cellos.

He started the majority of the World Cup qualifying matches, but his place now looks in doubt. Cellos has recovered and taken his place at club level, and LDU Quito's Cristian Mora has impressed when given his chance for Equador.

Villafuerte's reputation for off-field antics has also hampered his chances, but he will provide tried and tested back-up in Germany.
