Position: Defender
Born: 04.01.80
Club: Benfica

A converted winger, Miguel now plays at right-back where his attacking instincts regularly see him marauding down the flank when Portugal spring forward.

The defender started his career at Estrela Amadora before moving to Benfica in 2000 with his international debut coming three years later against Italy.

At Euro 2004 he was first-choice right-back as Portugal reached the final only to lose to Greece for the second time that tournament and his performances led him to be linked with the likes of Manchester United.

But having won a league title and domestic cup at Benfica, it was Valencia who shelled out £5.5million to take him to the Mestalla.

He might find himself second in the pecking order this time around but will push Chelsea's Paulo Ferreira all the way for a place.
