Imposing goalkeeper Schwarzer started his career in Australia with Marconi Fairfield in 1990, where he played alongside a young Christian Vieri.
At 21 his dream of a move to Europe was realised when he joined Dinamo Dresden, and his impressive displays alerted Kaiserslautern.
Bradford City manager Chris Kamara spotted Schwarzer whilst on trial at Manchester City and promptly paid £155,000 to take him to Valley Parade.
After only 16 appearances Premiership clubs were courting him and he opted for Middlesbrough in February 1997.
Since then, 6ft 4in Schwarzer has proven himself as one of the Premiership's most consistent goalkeepers, and an automatic choice as Australia's number one.
He produced two superb saves in the penalty shoot out against Uruguay that sealed Australia's World Cup qualification, and will have extra motivation to show his ability in Germany, the homeland of his parents.
