Togo coach Otto Pfister blamed his players' attitude after they squandered the lead to lose 2-1 to South Korea on Tuesday.
After a much-troubled build-up to the tournament - which saw Pfister resign and then return in the last few days - Togo got off to a dream start when Mohamed Kader fired in an excellent shot to put them in front.
However, things began to fall apart in the second half when Jean-Paul Abalo collected a second yellow card and Lee Chun-Soo scored from the resulting free-kick. Ahn Jung-Hwan's deflected shot won it for South Korea, leaving Togo with an uphill battle to qualify from a tough group.
Pfister was critical of the way his team applied themselves.
He said: "If you coach an African team you have to respect your opponents.
"Everyone was over-confident, me included, and we paid the price."
