Vying with Lukasz Fabianski for the role of understudy to Artur Boruc, Tomasz Kuszczak's World Cup call was reward for being one of the bright lights of West Brom's unsuccessful battle against relegation from the Premiership.
The Baggies signed the 24-year-old on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2004 but he spent much of his first season on the bench.
The departure of Russell Hoult the following year created an opening but Chris Kirkland's arrival on loan provided more frustration for Kuszczak.
Yet another injury for the Liverpool man presented the Pole with his chance, though, and he hasn't looked back, pulling off a contender for save of the season at Wigan.
Still an international novice having won just three caps when the squad was named (only one of those since 2003), Kuszczak is a talented young keeper.
