At 30 years of age Pavel Mares has made just two competitive international appearances since his debut in 2002, so it's something of a surprise he's got a ticket to the World Cup finals.

However Czech Republic fans need not be alarmed as he will only be an understudy for the highly talented Marek Jankulovski in the left-back spot.

Mares is no stranger to the position he finds himself in as two years ago the Zenit St Petersburg man was part of the Euro 2004 squad which reached the semi-finals - but he was used in just a single game.
