Joris Mathijsen came through the youth system at Willem II and went on to spend five years there as a professional before moving to AZ Alkmaar in 2004.

The 26-year-old made his debut for Holland in the same year, in a 3-0 win at Andorra in a World Cup qualifier near the start of manager Marco van Basten's tenure with Holland.

The defender played three times in the Dutch World Cup qualifying campaign but could be relying on substitute appearances for some action in Germany.
