Firmly established as the understudy to first choice Roberto Abbondanzieri, Leonardo (or Leo as he is more commonly known) Franco is tall and agile and possesses all of the qualities need by a top-class goalkeeper.

The undoubted No 1 at club level with Atletico Madrid since moving to the Spanish capital from Real Mallorca in June 2004, the 29-year-old is one of several players in the squad with strong links with national coach Jose Pekerman having won the World Youth Championship under him in 1997.

He struggled to make much of an impact under Marcelo Bielsa but Pekerman rates him highly and he will let no-one down if called upon in Germany.
