Born and raised in Hamburg, Otto Addo qualified to play for Germany but he opted for Ghana and since then he probably has looked back.
The creative midfielder has hardly featured for the national side since he decided back in 1999 that his future lay with the Black Stars despite a long and fruitful career in Germany which dates back to 1991.
After successful spells with Hamburg and Hannover 96 his big chance came in 1999 when he signed for Borussia Dortmund but things would go downhill from that fateful year.
As a flourishing attacking player, Addo was then hailed in his homeland as the new Abedi Pele but three cruciate ligament problems in his right knee have blighted what was once a promising talent.
Having made just 75 appearances in six seasons with the German giants, Addo moved to Mainz last May and now looks to be over his injury jinx and fulfilling his potential, even at this late stage.
Addo, who will be 31 during the World Cup, is a big man who, despite being a little slow off the mark, is a good dribbler but can sometimes hold onto the ball too much.
He is one of the leading candidates to fill the role of Laryea Kingston this summer after the Lokomotiv Moscow player was handed a four-match suspension following an altercation at the African Nations Cup.
