A midfield workhorse whose presence allows the more eye-catching players around him to express themselves, Emerse Fae spent much of the qualifying campaign on the fringes, playing just 72 minutes as the Ivory Coast booked their passage to Germany.

An established fixture in the Nantes midfield over the past three years, the 24-year-old's performances have been one of the highlights of a difficult spell - the 2004 Coupe de la Ligue final excepted - for the once-mighty club.

His goals record is far from great at both club and international level, but that is not what his game is all about - he has more of a destroyer's role.
