Ostensibly a right-back by trade, Marco Caneira has filled in at the centre of defence on occasions and looks more than capable in either position. Although still only in his mid-20s, Caneira has represented some of Europe's biggest clubs during his career so far and can draw on experiences from the likes of Internazionale, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and current side Valencia.

Caneiro has enjoyed a successful career in Portugal's youth sides, winning the UEFA European Under-16 and Under-18 Championships. He has also captained the Portugal Under-21s before making his senior debut in 2002 where he was part of that year's World Cup squad.

He was left out of the Euro 2004 squad and although not a guaranteed starter for the senior squad, he will be pleased to be making the trip this time around. Into double figures in terms of caps won, Caneira offers versatility as he can also anchor the midfield as well as playing in defence.
