Dubbed the Spanish Luis Figo, Joaquin made his international debut against the real thing in a friendly match with Portugal in Feburary 2002.
And the right-winger impressed enough to claim a place in Jose Antonio Camacho's World Cup squad that year, featuring in two matches there and showing the world just why he is so highly rated.
Yet following a man-of-the-match performance against South Korea, he missed a vital penalty in the shoot-out that resulted in Spain being dumped out of the competition so will have special reason to shine this time around.
Now 24, Joaquin has remained at hometown club Real Betis despite being linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United, who are thought to covet the services of one of Europe's brightest talents.
Primarily a winger blessed with electric pace and a dazzling array of tricks, the youngster - who appeared seven times in qualifying scoring one goal - is capable of causing problems for any defence in the competition.
