Club: PSV Eindhoven

Hardly the most high-profile member of the Australian squad yet Archie Thompson holds the world record for the most goals in an international game.

That momentous day came back in 2001 when he netted no less than 13 in the Socceroos' 31-0 rout of American Samoa in a World Cup qualifier.

Soon after, the New Zealand-born striker secured a contract with Lierse in Belgium, persisting there after injuries almost saw him leave the club.

Thompson chose to return to Australia last summer to play for Melbourne Victory in the inaugural season of the A-League but the lure of Europe - and the chance to link up with national boss Guus Hiddink at club level - proved too strong as he joined PSV Eindhoven in January.

Having made his international debut against Colombo in 2001, Thompson spent three years in the international wilderness but is now back firmly in favour.
