Ante Covic came from nowhere to earn a place as third-choice keeper behind Mark Schwarzer and Zeljko Kalac for the play-off against Uruguay - and must have impressed Guus Hiddink in training as he has made it into the Finals squad.

A consistent performer for Hammarby, one of the stronger teams in Sweden's top flight, Covic was given a late call-up to a Socceroos training camp in Hiddink's native Holland and has made the most of his belated chance at international level.

Since his early days at Marconi Stallions he has always been reliable and a terrific shot-stopper, and is one of a string of players in Australia's squad with Croatian parents.

Much travelled, Covic can also list PAOK Salonika (Greece) and Hertha Berlin (Germany) amongst his former clubs.
