Jermaine Jenas is something of a surprise inclusion in England's World Cup squad but appears to have earned his chance following injuries to, among others, his club captain Ledley King.
After bursting onto the scene with hometown club Nottingham Forest, Jenas was sold to Newcastle in February 2002 for £5million.
Having represented England at various youth and Under-21 levels, he made his senior debut as a second-half substitute in the 3-1 home defeat by Australia at Upton Park in February 2003, winning the Man of the Match award.
He was named PFA Young Player of the Year at the end of the season and continued to feature in the England squad, making five more appearances in friendlies before Euro 2004. However, Jenas' form had dropped for Newcastle and he did not make Sven-Goran Eriksson's final squad.
Despite returning to Eriksson's plans after Euro 2004 - and making his first start for England in the 1-0 win in Azerbaijan - it became more and more apparent that all was not well on Tyneside for Jenas.
He was one of England's better players on the brief tour to the USA last summer, starting against the hosts and Colombia, but back home, relationships were strained.
When he was quoted as saying life at Newcastle was like "living in a goldfish bowl", a transfer was on the cards and the Magpies did good business, selling him to Tottenham for £7million.
Jenas netted seven goals from midfield and was a lively performer in his first campaign at White Hart Lane, but made little impact in World Cup qualifying, only adding a substitute's appearance in the last game against Poland to his cap in Azerbaijan.
Despite his inconsistencies, Jenas is an accomplished and poised midfielder whose languid style disguises a steely determination.
His skill and intelligent use of the ball could be a useful option for Eriksson but it is difficult to seeing him getting much action in Germany.
