Another graduate of L'Institut National de Football in Clarefontaine, Saha's development into a top-class striker was rubber-stamped by a move to Manchester United in January 2004.
An intelligent performer, the 27-year-old's pace and movement make him handful for any defence while he is an accomplished finisher with both feet and his head.
Saha started out at Metz and impressed sufficiently to earn a loan spell with Premiership Newcastle but did not enjoy his time on Tyneside.
Then-Fulham boss Jean Tigana remained convinced of the player's potential, however, and signed him for £2million in the summer of 2000.
The striker was outstanding in his first season in England, firing the Cottagers to promotion, but then initially failed to adapt to life in the Premiership.
A blistering start to the 2003/4 campaign with the revitalised west London side served a reminder of his ability and Sir Alex Ferguson decided it was worth shelling out £12million for the Frenchman.
Saha's spell in Manchester has been repeatedly punctuated by injury but he showed his ability by delivering goals when ousting Ruud van Nistelrooy at the tail end of this season.
He made his France debut within a month of joining United in 2004 but played just 98 minutes in qualifying and may be on the fringes this summer.
