Though undoubtedly the third-choice American keeper behind Kasey Keller and Tim Howard, Marcus Hahnemann did get 90 minutes' action under his belt during the qualification campaign.
Tall and imposing, the Washington-born custodian made his name with Seattle Sounders in the American A-League before moving up the ladder to MLS side Colorado Rapids.
His German passport allowed him to sign for Fulham for a nominal fee during the 1999-2000 season but after a brief loan spell he soon moved to Reading.
Hahnemann has since established himself as the first choice at the Madejski and was a key performer as they booked their place in the Premiership by winning the Championship with a record points total of 106 for the season.
Known as something of a maverick away from football, his personality could keep the American camp bubbling in Germany.
