Meat features highly on almost every menu in Munich. Tuck into hearty specialities like the ubiquitous Weisswurst (white veal sausage), eaten with sweet mustard and pretzels, calorie-rich Leberkäse
(liver meatloaf) and Schweinebraten mit Knödel
(pork with dumplings). A great spot to savour these local flavours is the open-air food market, Viktualienmarkt.
Sausage Stop: Ratskellar
The central and cosy Ratskellar (Am Marienplatz 8) has a lengthy sausage
menu, and serves other specialities like Maultaschen (Swabian
ravioli), and Ochsen Tafelspitz (ox roast). A visit to the wine cellar is worthwhile.
Bavarian Bites: Nürnberger Bratwurst Glöckl am Dom
This friendly, local haunt (Frauenplatz 9) has well-prepared Bavarian
dishes such as Rostbratwürst'l (pork sausages) and Rindsboullion (beef broth). The wood-beamed restaurant also serves
excellent beer straight from the barrel.
Simply Spicy: Mongos
Funky and upbeat, Mongos (Oberanger 28) offers a spicy menu of Japanese, Thai and Mongolian flavours. The decor is ethnic and the logic simple - pick your ingredients and seasonings, then leave the rest to the chefs. Bison carpaccio and Thai red curry are particularly good.
