Cologne is most famous for its light and refreshing Kölsch beer - best drunk fresh and cold in small glasses (Stangen). Kölners are rightly proud of their local brew and drink little else. You'll find this tasty gold-hued lager wherever you go.
Beer on tap: Brauerei Zur Malzmühle
Almost completely destroyed in the war, this excellent brewpub (Heumarkt 6) has some great beers on tap, including the Kölsch that's popular among the regulars.
Kölsch central: Päff
This relaxed drinking hole (Friesenwall 130) used to be a favourite among trendy types, but since refurbishment has appealed to a more down-to-earth crowd. It has a good menu too.

Named after a famous German comedian, this popular, lively bar (Zülpicher Platz 16) guarantees a good night out.
