Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves believes that organisation is the key to the recent success of the Palancras Negras, or Black Antelopes as the national side is known.

Goncalves took the reins from his Brazilian predecessor Ismael Kurtz in late November 2003 and since then the country's footballing fortunes have been transformed.

It was in Rwanda last year that a goal from Fabrice Akwa saw Angola qualify for the World Cup for the very first time, pipping Nigeria to top spot in the group by virtue of a better head-to-head record with the Super Eagles.

Most African teams have relied on foreign coaches to bring them success but Angola have, in Oliveira Goncalves, instead put their faith in local knowledge.

Oliveira, 52, began his work with the national set-up in the early 1990s and worked with first the Under-17 and then the Under-20s. However, several times he declined to take charge of the senior team as he did not believe the organisation provided the right environment for the team to succeed.

Oliveira Goncalves told PA Sport: "Some members of the Angolan Football Federation invited me for a fifth or a sixth time. I needed to be sure that I had the conditions to do a good job. I demanded some conditions from the Angolan authorities and they duly granted me my wish."

Having taken the job, Goncalves started to reshape the team into his preferred image.

That policy has paid dividends and Oliveira Goncalves has made African footballing history in becoming the first home-grown coach to lead his compatriots to the World Cup.

However, he has played down his achievements, saying: "I feel no different to any other coach who has demanded conditions to work in and has then been successful.

"What I have achieved as a coach does not make me superior to anybody else. I believe that the secret for good work is to know the reality of the country and if anyone knows Angola I do."

Oliveira Goncalves first made waves on the international scene when he led a group of talented young players to success in the Youth African Nations Cup.

The same team also qualified for the FIFA Youth Cup in Argentina in 2001 but they could only reach the second round where they were beaten by Holland.

However, Oliveira Goncalves had built the spine of the Black Antelopes team that will get its chance on the biggest stage of all in June.

He has not had any time to rest on his laurels after leading Angola to the World Cup.

Since achieving qualification, he has also been scouting the world to monitor the form of players who could qualify to play for Angola and he hopes the team that travels to Germany will be a mix of Angolan residents and players who left the country as children.

The civil war between 1975 and 2002 led to millions fleeing the country but Oliveira Goncalves says he will only opt for foreign-based players if he is convinced they are better than home grown footballers.

"This is the main condition I impose on them," he said.

Oliveira Goncalves has identified a few players who could join the squad. Among them are defender Marco Abreu, who plays for Portimonense, midfielder Edson, who represents Pacos de Ferreira - both are based in Portugal - while midfielder Titi Bwengo plays in France's Ligue 2 for Clermont Auvergne.

However, the majority of players who will wear the red, yellow and black kits in Germany will be those who, guided by Oliveira Goncalves, helped the team qualify for their first appearance in the tournament.
